Laying tile

Before laying the surface requires preparation. It is necessary for the surface to be level and clean. The unleveled surface is undesirable; it is better to level it with special mortars. If the laying is done on old ceramic tiles or other material, adhesive with high stickness and elastity must be used. This would firmly hold the new slabs in place. For making laying adhesive, simply add dry mortar mixture into water and stir it. However, the adhesive should be used as quickly as possible because it’ll become unusable within 6-8 hours. Adhesive flow rate is considered to be 1.5kg per 1sq. m. with one mm mortar thickness. In practice, however, this number may vary depending on a layer’s expertise, kind of tiles and the surface. The maximum thickness of adhesive is five millimetres. If it is more, it’s difficult to install the tiles.

After the surface is ready, adhesive mortar is applied on it. It is inadvisable to put adhesive immediately on a large area because it retains its properties within 10-30 minutes after application. The adhesive stickiness can be checked with hands: if it sticks to the fingers, one can glue. If not, one should remove the old adhesive and put a new layer. When a tile is tightly pressed to the surface, it’s necessary to slightly knock on it to make sure in a complete contraction. Once the tile has been glued, you have another ten minutes to correct its position. Before gluing, the tiles are not wetted. After laying, the tile is rinsed and cleaned and then wiped with a dry rug. Whule laying, it is recommended to wear rubber gloves.
